Consider Your Options
Mentoring is most commonly thought of as bound by geographical location, but it doesn't have to be. Technologies like the internet have broken the proximity barriers usually associated with mentoring. Mentors and mentees no longer need to live in the same area, or even the same country. When looking for a mentor, remember to consider those outside of your geographical location. You never know who you'll find!
Iron Sharpens Iron
It takes strong mentors to create strong leaders, but how does one become a strong mentor? Some say mentors are shaped through human interaction - who we talk to, who we spend time with, and who we look up to all play a roll in who we become. Talk with your mentor today about how those around you affect your day to day life.
Don't let Opportunities Slip By
We all wait for the "perfect" opportunity. A dream job offer, or internship, or new position all come to mind. But, while we're waiting, great opportunities might pass us by. Seize every opportunity given - you never know, it may lead you places better than you could ever dream of.
If You're Grateful, Say It
There are many times in life when we feel grateful. However, it is easy to let the feeling go without ever properly expressing it. If you are grateful for something or someone, be sure to say it out loud. You'll be glad you did.
Growth isn't Easy
Growth can be a difficult, almost painful experience. Consider a teething infant. The feeling of a tooth making its way through the gums is by no means a nice sensation, however the long term benefits far outweigh the temporary pain. Talk with your mentor today about how you can endure your growing pains gracefully.
If at First You Don't Succeed, Simplify
There are many times in life where we make things much harder than they need to be. If you find yourself in a difficult situation and you don't know where to turn, look around and see what you can do to simplify and consolidate. When problems are boiled down to their core they often aren't as intimidating. Talk with your mentoring partner about the parts of your life that need simplifying.
It's the time of year when students return from their winter break activities and head back to class. Although breaks of this sort are very much needed, during this time students loose a great deal of the knowledge they had previously learned. Talk with your mentoring partner about how you can dedicate yourself to becoming a lifelong learner - education is the greatest gift you can give yourself.
Positivity is Key
During these long winter days and cold winter nights it can be difficult to keep a positive outlook. Talk with your mentor today about how you can remain positive even when things look bleak.
Perseverance is Key
In the days following a busy holiday season it is easy to push aside responsibilities and spend just a few more minutes in "holiday mode". Although everyone needs a good vacation now and again, at some point we all have to come back to reality. Talk with your mentoring partner today about how you can push through that after holiday exhaustion and reach your goals.
It is easy to see how mentoring can be beneficial at a new job or within a new position, but sometimes mentoring is overlooked in situations in which it's not so obviously helpful. Consider the parts of your life that are very important to you, but could use a little direction. Mentoring belongs there, too.
